Best Practices
Get the most out of Omake with these tips from merchants running successful gift-with-purchase campaigns.
Start with one tier
Don't overcomplicate things on day one. Start with a single tier — for example, "Spend $50, get a free sample." See how customers respond, check your dashboard analytics, and add more tiers once you know what works.
Set thresholds just above your current AOV
The sweet spot is a threshold slightly above your average order value. If your AOV is $45, set your first tier at $50. This nudges customers to add one more item without feeling like a stretch. Check your Shopify analytics for your current AOV, then set your threshold 10-20% higher.
Use gifts that feel valuable but cost you little
The best gifts have high perceived value and low cost to you. Samples, accessories, trial sizes, and branded items all work well. Avoid giving away your best-selling products as gifts — you want to drive sales, not cannibalize them.
Choose the right mode for your campaign
- Use Replacement mode for simple, time-limited promotions (e.g., "Spend $75, get a free gift this weekend"). It's straightforward and easy for customers to understand.
- Use Cumulative mode for always-on campaigns where you want to encourage bigger carts. Stacking gifts across tiers creates a "what do I get next?" effect that keeps customers adding.
Run Buy X, Get Y promotions with product-in-cart triggers
Use the Product in cart trigger type to create targeted promotions. For example:
- "Buy our new moisturizer, get a free sample kit" — add the moisturizer as the trigger product and the sample kit as the gift.
- "Buy any two items from our summer collection, get a free tote" — add the summer products as triggers, set match mode to Any product, and set the required quantity to 2.
- "Buy both the shampoo and conditioner, get a free hair mask" — add both as triggers and set match mode to All products.
Product-in-cart triggers are great for promoting new products, clearing inventory, or creating product bundles that feel like a deal.
Customize the widget to match your brand
Take a few minutes to match the cart widget to your store's look and feel. On the Your Omake page, open the Customize panel to:
- Set your accent color to match your brand palette
- Turn on gift images so customers can see exactly what they're getting
- Write locked text that motivates ("Spend [threshold] more to unlock your free gift!")
- Write unlocked text that celebrates ("You've earned these free gifts")
A well-branded widget feels like part of your store, not a third-party add-on.
Keep your gift bag image on-brand
Customers see the gift bag in their cart before checkout. Upload a custom image on the Your Omake page that matches your brand. A branded gift bag image builds excitement and looks more intentional than a generic placeholder.
Promote your offer
Omake handles the cart mechanics — but customers need to know the offer exists. Add a banner to your store, mention it in email campaigns, and highlight it on product pages. The more visibility, the more customers will chase the threshold.
Monitor your dashboard
Check your Omake dashboard regularly to track:
- AOV lift — Are gift orders meaningfully higher than your average? If not, raise your thresholds.
- Orders with gifts — If this number is low, your thresholds might be too high or your offer needs more visibility.
- Gifts given — Keep an eye on inventory for your gift products.
Test before going live
Then set your real thresholds and go live.

Keep your gift inventory stocked
Either set your gift products to continue selling when out of stock or monitor inventory closely and swap gifts before they run out.
Rotate gifts to keep things fresh
Running the same gift for months? Your repeat customers will notice. Rotate your gift products periodically to keep the offer exciting. Seasonal gifts work particularly well — they create urgency and a reason to come back.
